The Knight Watch
Session 9 Part 2
The holy symbol of Pelor that has been guiding the guys through the swamp, darkens- there it is… The Sky Home!
Distinctly underwhelming… it’s a ruin.
However the guys are not put off, because there’s something else here to explore, to the east- a canvas structure, like a bender or small yurt- a wooden framed abode.
Cautiously, with Leodoor leading the way, the guys check out the place- and discover much junk; rune scribbled bones, various shamanistic talismans, augury devices- Ayumu and Jazz figure, and some soup that seems to be made from ‘Urggh!’, and is at least three days old, cold and moldy.
But somebody lived here… the guys get to thinking- they figure a Shaman of some sort, probably a humanoid but, alas, there’s little else to go on. Although, Leodoor finds a set of footprints- days old, the tracks are heard to spot (DC20+) but the Elf Ranger is more than a match, Leodoor discerns that the tracks lead directly to the ruins…
They head forward to investigate…
The swamp explodes, the guys have to scramble to stay on their feet as a huge Swamp Worm emerges a full twenty feet from the mire- thirty or more feet away the beasts tail breaks the surface- the creature is over fifty feet long…
PC bait- a Massive Swamp Worm/Serpent.
Encounter #16 The Swamp Worm.
875 XP Level 4 Encounter
And so the bad guy is-
Massive Swamp Worm- Solo Brute Level 4
Adapted Blackwater Serpent
It gets bloody for a while but it’s all over remarkably quickly, the beast has massive reach- it swoops down and crunches in to Ayumu leaving the Psion bloodied in one hit, and squirming as the poison takes hold. The great beasts tail reaches around and flattens Destructorr, who is slow to react, the warforged scrambles as he’s Pushed almost in to the swamp.
Then the PCs unload everything, not the dailies but their encounter powers- and every Action Point they have, and here’s the thing, here’s the kicker- they don’t miss a single attack.
The 162 hit point beast is taken down in one round, ten attack actions- it of course doesn’t help that Leodoor manages to launch four arrows for 57 points of damage (Two-Fanged Strike & Twin Strike), it also doesn’t help when Morok crits for something like 28 damage with one of his attacks, the other is also for nearly 20 damage…
I could have cried- one more attack sequence for me, with an Action Point of my own of course, and two of the PCs would have been down- such is the damage this creature is capable of.
Maybe I did cry a little.
The great worm is destroyed.
ENCOUNTER #16 COMPLETE PC’S LEVEL 2 WITH 2278 XP EACH
Enough XP for level 3- if only they can take a rest.
Soon after Destructorr and Morok are all over the fallen beast- hunting for souvenirs, the pair settle on a great fang each- the worms poison injecting hollow fangs are nearly three feet long- they extract their mementos with great care, the stories they’re going to tell back in the city.
The guys back off from the ruin for a moment to take a short rest, grin a lot to themselves for a bit, and then head back in.
